Aryans Group of Colleges (AGC) today organized a seminar on “Changing Roles and Responsibilities of Media” at PHD Chamber, Chandigarh. Sh. Tarun Basu, Chief Editor and Director, Indo-Asian News Services (IANS) was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Sh. Ramesh Vinayak, Resident Editor, Hindustan Times, Chandigarh; Mr. Dave Bloss & Mrs. Jody McPhillips, senior American journalists; Sh. Naveen Garewal, president of Chandigarh Press Club; Sh. Sunil Saxena, Dean, International Media Institute of India (IMII), New Delhi, addressed the MBA, BBA and BCA students of AGC. The seminar was presided over by Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Group.
Sh. Tarun Basu, Chief Editor Director, Indo-Asian News Services (IANS), while addressing the students said, “Media has undoubtedly a significant and influential role in modern day society. As a means of communication, in a world of advanced technology, media through various forms such as the radio, television, newspapers etc touches all spheres on this earth. Therefore it is the responsibility of the media to provide people with every tiny detail of what is going on in any part of the world in the most fair manner. The role of media is not only to inform but also to make people aware of things.”
Sh. Ramesh Vinayak, Resident Editor, Hindustan Times, Chandigarh said, “Present era is the time of information and rapidly changing technology. Media has an important role to play in this scenario. There are so many examples from our daily routine where media is directly or indirectly affecting our life. Like media can play a pivotal role in curbing violence in our society by doing constructive stories.”
Mr. Dave Bloss, a senior American journalist said that media across the world has a basic responsibility to help in the strengthening of the democratic society and to impart support in it’s sustenance.
When asked about the difference that he perceives in Indian and American media, Bloss stated, “I see this difference getting less and less with each passing day. It’s all about 24 by 7 news. In America we have observed that serious reporting has somewhat taken a backseat and it is more of personality coverage.”
Bloss also said that with the mushrooming of more and more media houses and news channels in the country, youngsters will get plethora of job opportunities ahead and it is also good for the whole industry.
Sh. Sunil Saxena, Dean, IMII, New Delhi, said that media is not only an important tool in obtaining news rather it is a source of information to tell us what to think and how to act in an assortment of circumstances. It not only influences the society but also it has already been proven in the past that it can be used to churn propaganda to create a nationalistic feeling within a given country.
Dr. Anshu Kataria, chairman, Aryans group, said, “Media has undergone manifold diversification in the past many years and its role has gradually changed from a mere watchdog of the society to a far more responsible institution.”
