B-SCHOOLS WELCOMES COURT’S STAY ON CONTROVERSIAL AICTE’S NOTIFICATION

Chandigarh (24/02/2011)

B-schools in the Chandigarh region have welcomed the stay given by the Orissa High Court on the controversial December 12 notification of the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) whereby the B-schools were to operate as per the respective state government operated processes. The statutory body had laid down that the fee structure of all B-schools would also be decided by the state governments.

Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Business School, said this stay has come as a relief from the oppressive new notification which was slated to upset the well placed system of admissions to the B-schools apart disturbing the prescribed fee structures which the state governments would have decided if the new notification was implemented. This would not only have led to harassment to the institutes but also to the aspiring students who would have to follow new procedures.

He added that they expected a favorable decision from the court as the case is listed for hearing on March 23, 2011 and admissions to PGDM, PGDM (Executive), PGDM (Certificate) for 2011 – 2012 shall be subject to the disposal of writ petition. He further said since the B-schools have set up state of the art infrastructures in their respective institutes such bindings to bring them under the ambit of state government’s was a negative step.

Mr. Satnam S Sandhu, Chairman, Chandigarh Business School, while reacting to this development said the decision of the AICTE to do away with MBA entrance exams like XAT, ATMA, MICAT and instead only authorize CAT, MAT or state governments to conduct tests would serve as the entry points to B-schools, would have created a mess of the well set present system of entrance examinations as the B-schools would have to coordinate on a fresh basis with the state governments to put in place a new system.

The B-schools in the region were unanimous in their views to oppose the December 12 AICTE’s notification and they felt relieved at the court’s stay. Echoing similar views CA Manmohan K Garg, Chairman Gurukul Business School said the notification was an oppressive step as bringing the B-schools as the state governments would fail to match equivalent standards. The court’s stay had raised a ray of hope for the B-schools. He said the relief would allow them to make admissions as per the existing procedures and they would not have to depend on the state governments to conduct the admission tests.

Dr Kataria while pressing for an early solution said that though the issue had been taken up by the B-schools across the nation with the AICTE and even the Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibbal but they had failed to get relief. Dr Kataria also demanded the AICTE to reconsider the recently effected hike of 200 to 500 per cent in the processing fee of various professional courses for the new institutes and said the hike had put a stop on the growth of new educational institutes.
