PHD CHAMBER WELCOMES ALLOWING CORPORATE ENTRY IN EDUCATION SECTOR

Chandigarh, 17 February 2011

Welcoming the move to allow corporate sector to open educational institutes, Dalip Sharma, Regional Director, PHD Chamber said that the recent move of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) to allow corporate sector to start educational institutes would not only bring about healthy competition in this field but also lead to improvement in the quality of education being imparted.

Sharma said this would lead to opening of several educational institutes by known names in the industry and would mark the beginning of a new era in the Education sector. While the step will help open quality institutes it will also enhance the coordination of the industry with education. However, demanding the AICTE to reconsider its decision regarding hike of 200 to 500 per cent in the processing fee Sharma said that this would discourage fresh investment in the educational sector.

Dr. Anshu Kataria, Convener, Education Sub Committee, PHD Chamber and Chairman, Aryans Group of Colleges (AGC), Chandigarh, while reacting to this revised fee issue said that this has put an undue strain on the educational institutes and that they would be forced to curtail their plans of expansion.

Dr Kataria, said that earlier for starting an engineering college, the Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) was for Rs.35 lakhs, but now it has been increased to Rs.90 lakh and for MBA, Pharma and other colleges, the FDR has been increased from Rs.15 lakhs to Rs.35 lakhs. This would put a halt on all expansion activities in the private educational sector who wish to expand in other disciplines and more so as the processing fees to be paid by an Institution to start a new project has also been increased to Rs.7,50,000 from the earlier amount of Rs.1,00,000.
